Dahlias are a very special cut flower crop well known worldwide except in Oklahoma. They can be grown here just not as easily as in other places. Dahlias are THE flower that event florists crave when designing for any event from a banquet to an extravagant wedding. Dahlias don't ship well so buying local is a needed option.

Dahlias come in a range of sizes from petite to Dinner Plate, literally the size of your head! They also come in a wide array of colors. So there is one to suit every person out there.
Dahilas are the beauty queens of the fall. They thrive in the fall when all the other flowers start to fade.
There are two ways to grow Dahlias. The first and traditional way is from planting a tuber which the plant creates during it's growing season. It looks like a little potato under the ground. Next year, plant one of those tubers and you will get an exact replica of the plant. A great way to propagate.
The other way to grow Dahlias is from seed. As the flower head dies it creates many seeds. You can use these seeds to create brand-new dahlia varieties. The Dahlia gene pool is very large and complex which is why the range of color and size is so vast.
Here at The Flower Meadow in Oklahoma we grow them both ways. We have tried and true known varieties that florists love and lots of new varieties growing in the U Pick Section. If we find a Dahlia everyone can't live without we will make sure to keep those tubers and grow it out! RANUNCULUS (April Blooms)
Growing up in Oklahoma, I had never seen Ranunculus flowers in real life before I started growing them here at our local flower farm. Even in some of the most charming and well-known Oklahoma gardens, this amazing flower full of ruffles never made an appearance.
The reason is simple, Ranunculus are a diva flower in our part of the country. They can’t be too cold or too hot, and since we’re in Oklahoma, our spring temperatures tend to jump straight from down right cold to tshirt weather with very little middle ground. When things are too fussy, most Oklahoma gardeners just don’t grow them.
Last year, we had an incredible harvest at our Coweta U-Pick Flower Farm, and we were able to introduce so many local flower lovers to these breathtaking blooms. They quickly became a highlight in bridal bouquets and spring flower arrangements across Tulsa and the surrounding areas.
Planted in late fall, grown under frost and freeze protection, and finished under shade to protect from the early heat of spring, these beauties are not ones to miss. I foresee a future of people lined up to pick their own Ranunculus bouquets, just as giddy as they are over tulips!

LISIANTHUS (Late June to Early July Season)
One of the most special summer flowers we grow is called Lisianthus. Known world wide by florists and used often in Bridal Bouquets, these amazing blooms have graced the fanciest venues not only in Tulsa but also around the world!
As the only You Pick Flower Farm in our area to offer Lisianthus we are introducing this special flower to a whole new audience to appreciate in a new and intimate way... in their homes!
They are known to resemble a rose and to have an incredible vase life! Which means that you will get to enjoy this flower in your bouquets for days (maybe even weeks!).
They bloom best late June and early July. They often grow as a spray of stems. Look for a few blooms to be opening before you cut it to have the most enjoyment.
The reason they are considered a specialty crop is that they take forever to bloom. Grown from a seed at the beginning of January and bloom almost 7 months later. They start off growing at a snail's pace. The weeds around them will choke them out if not weeded frequently. But when the heat of summer arrives, they shoot up tall and burst open with those amazing blooms we can't live without!
